The story of

Paper Planes

single / 2024-07-18
Singer-songwriter duet, indie folk / acoustic guitars, electic guitar, bass, drums, vocals

He asked me, “What are you thinking about?”, and I said, “Paper planes.”

And we took that little thought and sent my grey state of mind flying, powered by a colorful world of his, making mine a little lighter. In rhymes and little melodies that evolved with every hit of a Whatsapp “Send”, little pieces and shards recorded just in our phones’ voice memos, we pretty much put together the whole song before ever actually talking. We did call and talk later – to be excited about the song, together.

Paper Planes is, therefore, both grey and colorful, kind of mellow, but full of hope – it’s a song about one being there for the other. Even if there is sadness, even if one is drowning and unreachable, the song carries a message of enduring, apart and together, with hope and a promise of sending “paper planes” to remind them they aren’t, and won’t be, alone even if they feel lost.

& lyrics

If you stand in the grey, can I pull you towards the color
If seasons start to change, will I lose you to the dark
If paper planes of yesterdays fill out all that’s hollow
Do they leave what’s written on them
 Printed on the clouds tomorrow

So if I lose you to the dark
Will I find you come the dawn
And I’ll keep throwing paper planes
At the side of life that’s grey
In hopes that you send one back from there someday
 Hmmm

If I stand in the grey, would you pull me towards the color
As seasons start to change, I may get lost to the dark
My mind stayed in yesterday, the truth too hard to swallow
 Should’ve left memories alone
 Now I can’t find tomorrow

And if I wander into the dark
Will you turn the light on somehow
Will you throw more paper planes
Until one brings back my name
I hope that I will do the same for you someday
 Aaaah

So if I lose you to the dark
Will you turn the light on somehow
And I’ll keep throwing paper planes
Until one brings back my name
In hopes that you will send one back from there
I hope I’ll do the same for you
Please, do send one back from there
 Someday

If you stand in the grey, can I pull you towards the color
