He asked me, “What are you thinking about?”, and I said, “Paper planes.”
And we took that little thought and sent my grey state of mind flying, powered by a colorful world of his, making mine a little lighter. In rhymes and little melodies that evolved with every hit of a Whatsapp “Send”, little pieces and shards recorded just in our phones’ voice memos, we pretty much put together the whole song before ever actually talking. We did call and talk later – to be excited about the song, together.
Paper Planes is, therefore, both grey and colorful, kind of mellow, but full of hope – it’s a song about one being there for the other. Even if there is sadness, even if one is drowning and unreachable, the song carries a message of enduring, apart and together, with hope and a promise of sending “paper planes” to remind them they aren’t, and won’t be, alone even if they feel lost.
